GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS, PHOTOGRAPHERS AND PRESS RELEASES
General author and photographer guidelines appear below. However, if you have an idea for a feature story or photo shoot, please send a brief initial query first. If it matches our current editorial needs, we will contact you for the full article. Send your query using the contact information listed below. Resource Recycling currently does not provide any monetary compensation for editorial contributions. For an historical perspective, browse our editorial indexes from 1998 to present. Resource Recycling retains first North American serial rights, which means we have the first opportunity to publish the article in the recycling and solid waste press in the United States and Canada. Readers. Resource Recycling magazine is read by your professional peers. Our distribution is about 15,000, and we estimate readership to be over 40,000 across North America. A majority (61 percent) of our readers are affiliated with recycling and composting businesses. These may be executives, owners and managers. Another 24 percent work for local, state and federal government agencies that deal with recycling. About 9 percent is made up of waste haulers and other waste management services, and the others include waste generators (e.g., manufacturers and institutions), trade associations, libraries and universities, etc. Content. We encourage you to direct your writing toward your professional peers working in the recycling industry. Specifically, Resource Recycling looks for articles that move beyond the basics and offer new insights or new detail. We look for pieces that range 1,500 to 1,800 words, not including tables or figures. Longer pieces may be edited for space and clarity. Submission. Articles should be sent as attached files to an e-mail. Although we prefer Word format, we may be able to accept documents produced in other PC or Mac programs (ask before submitting). If your article includes figures, please also send the data points used to generate those figures (e.g., an Excel spreadsheet file or simple table). If e-mail is not an option, we ask that you submit your article on disk. In either case, it also is helpful for us to receive a fax copy of the article -- especially tables and figures -- in case the electronic file is unclear. Biography. In addition to your narrative, tables and figures, please also include the following information for each author: name, title/position, company/organization, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and Web site addresses. Graphics. We appreciate receiving photos or artwork specific to the topic of your article. Color prints or slides are preferred and can be returned upon publication. High-resolution digital files are acceptable provided the image has a resolution of 300 dpi or higher. Each photo must indicate credit and caption. If you do not indicate photo credit, credit will be given to the author's company or organization. If the photos must be returned, a mailing address must be provided. Contacts.
