5 | Register today for the Fair Trade Recycling Summit

The Fair Trade Recycling association (formerly WR3A) has invited importers of recycled electronic products from Africa, Asia and Latin America to tell their stories and present data on their organizations in a daylong Summit at Middlebury College in Vermont on April 16.

The event, which will be open to the public online, will highlight the environmental and economic benefits of socially responsible e-scrap recycling practices in the global marketplace. The centerpiece of the summit will be the announcement of five-year, $479,000 research grant to study fair trade recycling in Mexico, Peru, Bangladesh and China.

Speakers include Katharina Kummer Peiry (former executive secretary of the Basel Convention), Andrea Boron (U.S. International Trade Commission), author and journalist Adam Minter, and representatives from ISRI, Resolve, R2 Solutions, NERC, NRRA, a dozen overseas used tech import/export companies, and various campus sustainability offices. Researchers from MIT, the U.S. International Trade Office, and other global research institutions, will also be given a chance to present their views on fair trade practices in the recycling industry.

The goal of the summit, according to its organizers, is to encourage academic research and discuss what a "Fair Trade" certification program might look like for exports. Those interested in participating either in person or online can visit fairtraderecycling.org or click on the banner ad below.
