3 | SP Newsprint files for bankruptcy


North America's fourth-largest newsprint manufacturer, SP Newsprint Co., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week, citing a weak economy and high commodity prices as the reasons for the move.

4 | Recycling likely has little sway on the Congressional supercommittee


Called the supercommittee, a 12-member joint House and Senate committee has until late next week to deliver an important deficit reduction plan. If the committee, which has equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, fails to produce such a plan, steep budget cuts totaling $1.2 trillion will occur automatically. Thus, the committee is looking at numerous large budget cuts, revenue increases and tax-code revisions, and powerful lobbyists are scurrying around, trying to influence committee members.
