Plastipak to expand recycling plant

Plastipak to expand recycling plant

By Jake Thomas, Resource Recycling

Plastipak Packaging, a manufacturer of rigid plastic containers used for food, beverage and consumer products, has broken ground on an expansion to its Clean Tech plastic recycling facility in Dundee, Michigan.

The expansion is being undertaken to make room for the installation of advanced plastic recycling processing technology, and is expected to increase the availability of recycled PCR PET plastic resin for Plastipak's consumers. Currently, Plastipak recycles about five billion plastic bottles annually and the expansion is part of its strategic goal of recycling 10 billion plastic bottles annually within five years.

The Dundee facility has been in operation since 1988, and its expansion, which will be completed later this year, was facilitated by tax abatements approved by local authorities. The new project is expected to create 100 direct jobs.
