The Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology has developed a new way to depolymerize scrap PET using a combination of fungi and enzymes. Researchers claim the new process uses significantly less energy and resources, and yields much lower waste than conventional methods.

Indorama Ventures Public Co. has announced it is constructing a new PET recycling plant outside of Bangkok, Thailand. The new facility is slated for completion in 2012 and will have an annual capacity of over 39,000 tons.

Scotland is having a change of heart regarding a national ban on free plastic retail bags. The Scottish Parliament previously voted down a fee on bags, but the nation's environment secretary is reportedly opening up the issue again for study.

China's Guanwei Recycling Corp. attributed much of its 73 percent year-over-year increase in Q2 revenue to strong demand for its recycled LDPE. The company sold 14,480 tons of recycled LDPE in the second quarter of the year – an increase of 55 percent over the same period last year.
