EPA looks at border issues
EPA looks at border issuesBy Jake Thomas, Resource Recycling The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is requesting comment from interested parties and stakeholders on the draft "Border 2020: U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program" framework that will chart a course for how governments on both sides of the border tackle environmental issues, including recycling. The eight-year framework for environmental improvement along the border is being developed by both the U.S. EPA and its Mexican equivalent, as well as 26 U.S. border tribes and environmental agencies from each of the 10 border states. Included in its wide-ranging goals, are efforts to manage waste and recycle materials. Specifically, authorities in the U.S. and Mexico will seek to work together to address the lack of integrated waste management planning programs. The framework also aims to improve efforts to collect certain materials, such as e-waste, organic matter, household appliances, tires and others by developing priority waste streams for them, while leveraging national and international efforts to minimize waste. Additionally, it also recommends public-private partnerships and infrastructure investments in the border region, as well as the development of recycling markets and capacity.
