Norwegian firm Tomra Systems ASA has received Patent No. 8096397, which describes a method for identifying empty packaging in a reverse-vending machine and determining appropriate remuneration.

Beijing officials have announced that the city will close a giant recycling market on the northern edge of the capital. The market incorporates more than 800 recycling businesses employing nearly 30,000 workers. The city plans to use the area for new housing. Most of the workers are from rural areas in Henan province.
