RecycleMania returns

RecycleMania returns

By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling

As the NCAA basketball tournament returns, so will RecycleMania, a competition that runs alongside the college sporting event and seeks to drive recycling rates at college campuses.

Between Feb. 5 through March 30, 605 schools representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five Canadian provinces will compete in nine categories to see which college can recycle the most on a per-capita basis, which produces the least amount of waste and which recycles the largest percentage of their overall waste stream.

As part of the competition, schools submit weight data for paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and food waste collected along with trash generation each week. The results are measured up against each other, and the results are available throughout the competition. This year's competition also features a new electronics category and a promotional video competition.

Last year, 630 colleges and universities collected over 91 million pounds of recyclables and compostable organics. For more, visit www.recyclemaniacs.org.
