Polystyrene foam food containers make up 1.5 percent of all litter, according to a new study from consulting firm Environmental Resources Planning. ER Planning aggregated data from 19 litter surveys covering 240 cities in the U.S. and Canada in developing the report.

Tigard, Oregon-based Agilyx Corporation has received Patent No. 8,188,325, which describes a method and system for converting waste plastics into a form of purified crude oil.

TetraPak and Nestle are teaming up to install reverse vending machines at schools in Malaysia. School children can accumulate points for recycling bottles in the machines that can then be redeemed for prizes.

This year's graduating class at George Washington University donned caps and gowns made entirely of recycled plastic for their commencement ceremony.
