Texas improves but still lags in collection
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has announced the results for the second year of its computer recycling program, revealing that much more material was collected than the year before. The recycling program requires manufacturers operating in Texas to offer free recycling for their brand of computer requirement. During 2010, manufacturers collected 24.3 million pounds of computer equipment in the Lone Star state. While the numbers are significantly better than the 15 million pounds of electronics Texas collected in 2009, Texas' per capita collection rate is still less than one pound per resident. In 2010, Dell collected over 10 million pounds of unwanted computers, more than any other company, but still 3 million pounds less than its total collection volume in 2009. In second was Samsung, which brought in over 8 million pounds. Third was Altex Electronics Ltd. at 2.6 million pounds, followed by Song Electronics Ltd. at 1.6 million pounds. There are 78 manufacturers representing 123 brands that are registered in the state. Cities, counties, community organizations and schools helped out with collection and outreach efforts during 2010. |
