RecycleMania results inBy Jake Thomas As the NCAA collegiate basketball tournament wraps up, another competition that seeks to use college rivalries to drive recycling at the sporting event has also come to a close. The 11th annual RecycleMania saw 630 institutions of higher education participate in the eight-week contest that rallies students, faculty, staff and fans to best other schools by increasing on-campus recycling. This year, 91 million pounds of recyclables and organic materials were recovered during the competition, up from last year's 84.5 million pounds. California State University-San Marcos took the title of "Grand Champion" for the seventh time by reaching a 79.69 percent cumulative recycling rate during the competition. The "Per Capita Classic" award went to Union College in New York, which collected 55.69 pounds of recyclables per person. North Lake College, for the fourth year in a row, took the "Waste Minimization" award, producing only 3.07 pounds of municipal solid waste — both recyclables and trash — per person.
