Reward offered in CRT glass competition

With more consumers trading in their old cathode-ray tube TVs for flat screens, two organizations are offering a cash reward to anyone that can come up with a new way to effectively process CRT glass.

The Consumer Electronics Association and the Environmental Defense Fund have announced "The Cathode Ray Tube Challenge: New Uses for Recycled Glass [1]." The challenge officially opened this week and will be accepting solutions on what to do with recovered CRT glass until Dec. 14.

The winning submission, which will be assessed for economic as well as environmental and health benefits, will be awarded $5,000 by the CEA. Up to four additional solutions are eligible $1,000 or more. The winning submissions will be widely shared by the CEA and the EDF with manufacturers, retailers and companies that process the lead-heavy glass.

The initiative is part of a partnership between the EDF and InnoCentive, a crowdsourcing organization that seeks to tackle the world's challenges through innovation.
