Ford plans to divert 2 million post-consumer plastic bottles [1] from landfills by putting them in its new cars. The automaker has announced that it intends to recycle the plastic bottles into its REPREVE seat fabric that will be included in the 2012 Focus Electric.

CalRecycle will hold a public meeting on the approval of the state's carpet stewardship plan. The meeting will be held on January 17 at 10:00 a.m. Details on how to participate can be found here [2].

A trio of healthcare and chemical companies including Baxter International Inc., Eastman Chemical Company and Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands have joined the Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council, a coalition of companies and organizations in the healthcare and recycling industries seeking to improve the recyclability of plastic products used for medical purposes [3].

NSF International, an independent organization that writes standards and certifies products to minimize their adverse health and environmental effects, has been named as the new administrator [4] of the Biodegradable Products Institute’s Certified Compostable program. The program was developed to test if materials will compost in a municipal or commercial facility, leaving no plastic or chemical residue.
