More hub-and-spoke in New Mexico
More hub-and-spoke in New MexicoBy Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling Eight communities in more remote parts of New Mexico have received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help them establish "hub-and-spoke" recycling systems. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (commonly known as the Stimulus Act), the New Mexican towns of Angel Fire, Las Vegas, Raton, Silver City and Truth or Consequences along with the counties of Cibola, Luna and Otero will receive a total of $590,903 to support their hub-and-spoke recycling systems. Under the collection model, remote communities (spokes) recover materials that are then fed into a centralized processing facility (hub). The awardees, several of which have received funding in the past for other elements of the same projects, will be granted the money to buy recycling equipment, improve existing facilities or collect material. Technical assistance will be provided by the New Mexico Recycling Coalition, which has been spearheading the hub-and-spoke initiative. |
