Microsoft cites recycling in carbon footprint announcement
By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling
Microsoft says it will be carbon neutral by July 1 – the start of the company's fiscal year. Included in the company's new green operations is an emphasis on IT asset efficiency and recycling.
The company identified underutilization of IT assets in general as a sustainability problem and announced that all procurement of new office IT and server infrastructure would conform to strict energy efficiency requirements. Additionally, all procurement of new assets will include a plan for reuse and recycling and a preference for EPEAT products.
Specifically, Microsoft cited the growing volume of annual e-scrap generation in developed countries as one of the reasons for making its decision. The company says growing resource constraints – both in terms of limits on energy production and rare earth metal scarcity – are important reasons why it is working on greening its operations.
