Greenstar North America Recycling Facility Tour

The 180,000 square foot facility is the largest MRF operating in Texas and one of the largest, fully-automated single-stream facilities in North America. The facility accepts single-stream material from San Antonio (nearly 400,000 house-holds) and Austin (about 200,000 households), as well as the Hill Country region of Central Texas. The facility handles commercially-generated recyclables as well, which are collected single-stream via front-end-loader truck routes. The Greenstar MRF operates one processing line for incoming material, of which then splits into two parallel lines for further separation of recyclables.

Designed by Van Dyk Baler Corp. to process at a capacity of 20,000 tons per month, the MRF is presently operating at about 50 tons per hour, or an average of 600-700 tons processed per day. The plant is equipped with a Bollegraaf single-stream processing system, which includes six Lubo single-stream StarScreens, a Lubo screen for old corrugated containers, a Lubo glass breaker, a glass cleanup system, seven Titech optical sorters and two Bollegraaf balers. A staff of 100 – working in two shifts – is employed at the Greenstar North America MRF.
